Cambodia Beaches

Which tropical beach or beaches to visit? To help with this tough decision, browse our choice of the best of Cambodia’s beaches here to find inspiration…

SIHANOUKVILLE BEACHES

Occheuteal Beach – The largest, most easily accessible and most popular beach in Sihanoukville, Occheuteal is where people meet to while away lazy days in the sun. Popular with expats and younger travelers, there are many laid back bars serving great seafood and other western and traditional dishes and the view out of the bay is spectacular. Sunset here is fantastic, and a large stretch of the beach is actually almost completely undeveloped.

Serendipity Beach – This is the name given to a picturesque small patch of beach at the most extreme northern end of Occheuteal Beach, where entertainment, accommodation and beachside dining catering to tourists can be found.

Otres Beach – For those who like to get away from it all, Otres Beach is a peaceful paradise just a couple of kilometers away from the main centre of Sihanoukville. It has a 3km long stretch of fine white sand across timeless blue sea and islands in the distance. Until now there have only been rumours of development, but nothing has happened yet save for some relaxed beach huts and the odd guesthouse.

Sokha Beach – A private beach shared only with other residents from Sokha Hotel. If you want to relax on a picture perfect beach, the best in Sihanoukville, this is the place for you…

REAM NATIONAL PARK BEACHES

Ream National Park Beaches – With the excellent continued conservation effort at Ream, the kilometers of beach which exist there are still pristine, with perfect stretches of palm lined chalk white beaches and turquoise seas abound. The beaches are unnamed, and empty, most of the time.

KEP BEACHES

Kep Beach – Kep Beach is the only beach in Kep Town. It’s a fairly narrow beach, however it is a gorgeous haven which offers beautiful sunsets and with a charming promenade looking over the bay, it’s a great place to observe the traditional life of the local fisherman bringing in their catch.

KOH KONG BEACHES

Cham Yeam Beach – Cham Yeam Beach is a picturesque beach sitting very close to Thailand which is earmarked for significant development. Right now it’s an untouched crescent of white sand bar the odd beachside restaurant.

Located around most beaches are local businesses who can arrange boat trips to the islands or beach and water activities if you so wish. Alternatively contact us and we’ll be happy to arrange your activities prior to your arrival.

Angkor Wat - the 8th Wonder of the World, the Pearl of Asia, and one of Mother Nature’s finest gardens combine in this tour which will give you a deep understanding of the elements that make Cambodia the incredible place it is today. Starting with Phnom Penh, you will see how life takes place in the capital city. Busy and exhilarating, but not sacrificing the spiritual feel instilled by the local religion and way of life of Buddhism, nor the unceasing smiles of the locals, through visits to the most important sights in the capital you will learn about Cambodia’s recent distressing history while also learning up close how Cambodia is the incredible place it is today. From Phnom Penh we will navigate the Tonle Sap Lake to reach Battambang, a stunning province famed for its beautiful countryside with piercing green rice fields, temples perched on limestone cliff tops, and the ‘bamboo train’! In Battambang the adventure is as much in the journey as the destination, and our tour of the beautiful remote elements of Battambang will take in sublime scenery at every juncture. And then we will visit Siem Reap, home to the world famous legacy of Angkor Wat, where one must prepare to be awe-struck by the incredible ancient city that awaits, and also Southeast Asia’s largest lake, the fascinating Tonle Sap.

Travel Styles

No two travelers are the same. Neither are any two travelers within a group the same. For all of us who travel, not only is it the formalities of budget and timescale that may vary for each one of us, but so will tastes, passions, personality, experience, and what it is for each person that gives us that inexplicable feeling gained through travel and discovery. In the same respect, neither are any two countries, or places within that country, the same. Far from it.

By getting the right combination between what each of us love and where we can find it, amazing adventures are created. We are fully aware of this, and it’s working to the finest detail with our customers to create the perfect travel experience for each person or group that we have always prided ourselves on. Our promise is to work closely with you to share our knowledge in order to provide you with a life-changing and rewarding travel experience anywhere you choose to go here in incredible Indochina and Southeast Asia. Your itinerary will reflect your passions and desires and our teams sensitivity to the needs of each group and indeed each individual who travels with us.

ADVENTURE TRAVEL – For adventurers the world over, Southeast Asia has been a prime location for many years now. Whether you want to trek through prime jungle, take a safari, hike up mountains, stare into the heart of a volcano, or share giggles with gibbons, it can all be done. And there’s no better place for it. With its rich geological composition, diverse nature and stunning scenery Southeast Asia is an excellent location for the adventure traveler with some of the most exciting adventures in the world on offer.

GROUP TRAVEL – Travelling in groups can be one of the most rewarding ways to experience a country, as you share experiences and ideas with like-minded individuals who share a common passion. But each person will have specific demands, and that is where we can come in. We’ve a wealth of experience working with groups and will consider the specific needs of every individual to ensure a perfect experience for both individual and group as a whole.

WOMEN’S TRAVEL – Girls just wanna have fun? Of course! The trend for female groups traveling together is becoming more and more popular these days. Southeast Asia is a wonderful destination owing to its safe and welcoming culture and our female groups have always appreciated the region for its warmth and extremely safe environment. You can choose your guide and hotel to suit the needs of your group and let us provide you with an unforgettable itinerary to take care of everything else.

GAY AND LESBIAN TRAVEL – Southeast Asia very much welcomes gay and lesbian travelers, as in an increasingly global world it embraces modern day customs and ideas. Certainly in the cities, homosexuality is just as much a part of life here as anywhere else, and is rarely stigmatized. Quite the contrary in fact, as everything from your guide to choice of hotel and spas, restaurants and bars are available to cater to gay travelers. In rural areas views may be more conservative, but certainly not to an extent where it could adversely affect your enjoyment.

HONEYMOON PERFECTION – Probably the most important holiday you’ll ever have… the opportunity to share an unforgettable experience with each other and in the most perfect surroundings. The possibilities are endless – whether you are in search of an idyllic beachside paradise or a luxury mountain retreat, you can experience the magic of Southeast Asia in the most romantic surroundings in the company of your partner.

LUXURY TRAVEL – We believe real luxury encompasses a very broad spectrum, and is often indefinable in itself. The highest in quality and service are of course to be expected, but the extras which can only be carefully chosen and arranged with deep insight and knowledge into the region will make the difference between a luxurious holiday and ‘the rest’. NANCO will take care of everything down to the finest detail for our guests who seek a luxury vacation, promising to go that step further to provide you with a perfect experience.

FAMILY TRAVEL / TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN – Travelling with children can be life-changing, both for parents and kids. Safety is of course of paramount concern for parents, as is keeping the kids entertained and interested so that mum and dad get the break they deserve too. Most of our staff have kids, and in a region where children take centre stage in society you can be sure they will be safe and cared for. We can provide all the facilities you need for your kids, and provide ideas to keep the whole family relaxed and entertained.

SENIOR TRAVEL – An increasing percentage of our clients are those who are choosing to embark on travel adventures later in life. The facilities available for senior travelers are first-class in Southeast Asia, and our destinations and attractions in each itinerary are chosen with each individual traveler in mind, as are hotels, and of course guides (all guides are trained in their area of expertise to work with guests of all ages). Senior travelers can enjoy this region just as much as anyone else, just let us know your where you want to go and at what pace you wish to go and we’ll make sure everything is tailored to your needs.

DISABLED TRAVEL – The Southeast Asia region continues to welcome increasing numbers of travelers with disabilities. All our itineraries are designed around the passions and needs of our guests, so let us know what you want to do, from divine luxury to exhilarating adventure, and we’ll make it happen.

MICE EVENTS – Southeast Asia can provide first class modern MICE facilities throughout all the major cities within the region. With the region’s combined economy ever increasing, the need for firsts rate hotels and business facilities is paramount. One added advantage is that costs compared to the west for such events are considerably less without sacrificing standards. And another is that all this is set within a vibrant and exciting region which can be experienced during your downtime.

PHOTOGRAPHY – Stunning exotic landscapes, exotic beaches, fascinating indigenous wildlife, and lots of smiles and laughter, always. Indochina is a photographer’s playground, a charming place where photogenic scenarios are not only to be found in the main tourist areas, but also simply observing the ever-changing scenarios of everyday life. Photographers will never have to venture very far to find inspirational subject material in this exotic wonderland.

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL - We do not offer ‘responsible travel’ as a travel option in itself. Our principles are founded upon the fact that all travel should be responsible, and we urge our clients to follow these principles. A little awareness and effort can go a long way in ensuring we can all travel responsibly at all times. If you wish to visit any charitable organizations or NGOs while on your trip, let us know and we would love to facilitate visits to those who we believe are working in the best and most effective way here in Cambodia. Please see our commitment to responsible and sustainable travel.

Angkor City

Angkor quite simply, is the breathtaking legacy from a period referred to today as the Golden Age of Cambodia, and is one of the world’s finest testaments to the archaeological and artistic brilliance of an ancient civilization. Angkor contains well over 100 incredible temples, spread across a vast area of 312 square metres and incorporating a great number of archaeological sites and ruins. Given that most of these temples were built over 1000 years ago and over a period of 700 years, the sheer magnitude and stunning complexity and beauty of their aesthetic simply render these temples truly awe-inspiring to anyone who sets their eyes on them. Angkor was the name given over 1000 years ago to mean ‘Holy City’, and today it is still exactly that for the people of Cambodia, their prided holy city.

Further Temples

The first Angkorian era temple was built in 802 under Jayavarman II whose roots were from the previous Chenla civilization, and during his following 30 year reign Angkor became an ostentatious city with which this ambitious and successful king asserted his authority by creating what in those days would have been nothing short of a ‘megacity’, where Hinduism was adopted as its main religion. Jayavarman II defeated opponents, established trade, and created a rich agricultural network from which the city prospered. Following Jayavarman II’s death several kings shared power, and the most influential was Suryavarman II, under whom Angkor Wat was created and dedicated, in an about-turn from tradition, to the Hindu god Shiva.

There was no long term successor to Suryavarman until 1181 when Prince Jayavarman VII took the throne following the successful defense of Angkor against the invading Vietnamese Cham. This powerful leader built Angkor Thom, where his state temple, Bayon, was located. He started a huge program of construction and was the creator of not only Angkor Thom but also the vast temples of Preah Khan and Ta Prohm. He instated Mahayana Buddhism as the religion of the Kingdom. Following Jayavarman VII’s death around 1215, Angkor went into decline as wars with neighbouring Thai forces and internal struggles tore the Kingdom apart, and in 1431 it was lost entirely to Thai invaders from Ayutthaya.

For years, Angkor was left to the elements. The Khmers were well aware of its existence however, but in the 19th century a French explorer, Henri Mouhot,‘re-discovered’ Angkor, and since then a succession of archaeologists, historians and restoration experts have both restored and brought the existence of Angkor to the world fore. Today it is visited by over 2 million people a year, and is still as magnificent today as it must have been 1000 years ago.

Although an entire compendium could easily be written about this stunning ancient city and the monuments which are found within, we’d prefer to leave that part to our guides who will give you all the history and anecdotes you need to enlighten you as to the story of Angkor, all told while exploring the great monuments firsthand. But in the meantime, we hope to whet your appetite with our Angkor Temples guide which includes all the main sites of Angkor.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat temple is nothing short of spectacular – a phenomenal display of architectural brilliance. The awe-inspiring temple, built in the 12th

century, is the legacy of King Suryavarman VII, and his masterpiece was constructed in honour of the Hindu God Vishnu and according to a complex design which reflects in every detail Hindu cosmology, mythology, and symbolism.

Angkor Wat, being the state temple of Suryavarman VII, took the design of a ‘temple mountain’. This building style was not unique to Angkor Wat, and similarly the temples of Bakong, Baphuon, Ta Keo, and several others were built this way. This style has a symbolic purpose, as it’s a representation of Mount Meru, which was where in Hindu Mythology it is believed the Gods resided.  To what extent the stunning moat which surrounds Angkor Wat was built for aesthetic reasons we can only speculate, but following the belief that the temple represented Mount Meru, the moat was almost certainly built to represent the surrounding ocean. To reach the temple this moat must be crossed via the magnificent causeway which emanates from Angkor Wat’s west side, and at this point you step into Angkor Wat’s outer enclosure.

On passing through the gates of the 1 kilometer square outer enclosure the sheer immensity and beauty of Angkor Wat in all its glory starts to unravel before your very eyes. A first set of columned windowed corridors house a powerful statue of the God Vishnu, decorated in golden robes, from where you can descend into the main complex and feast your eyes on the central structure of Angkor Wat. The three tiered complex is adorned with a quincunx of towers which have become an icon of Cambodia, and the perfection and symmetry in design of these towers becomes evident as you circumnavigate the site. The central lotus style tower emanates above the rest at whichever point you view the complex , and as you set foot into the main complex through one of the gopuras of the lower level gallery the significance of Angkor Wat starts to become apparent. Dominating the lower level a kilometer long stretch of incredible intricate carvings, both dramatic and humorous in equal measure depicts all manner of scenes of war, religion, and regal life. After exploring this beautiful art you can venture to the libraries, galleries and corridors of this immense complex before heading up to the second tier where you will emerge in the elevated courtyard built around the central tower. Perfect carvings of Aspara dancers, devas, asuras and more depictions from Hindu mythology decorate Angkor Wat and are seemingly never out of view.

This amazing man-made phenomenon must be seen to be believed. In the light of dusk, throughout the day, or under the setting sun, Angkor Wat has kept visitors spellbound since it was opened to the world quite recently. Be sure to not miss Angkor Wat while in Indochina and Cambodia.

Introducing Cambodia

Introducing Cambodia

Let's go Indochina - Seeing the real Cambodia with Nanco Travel

Thank you for choosing Nanco Travel Travel to organize your travel arrangements in the kingdom of Cambodia. This document will give you some more information about the country, the different destinations within Cambodia, useful facts for travelers, and a listing of the Exotissimo preferred hotels.

In Cambodia, Exotissimo has been very successful at offering tours which show a little bit more of the country then just the mass tourism places.  We opened our first office in Phnom Penh in 2000 and have since added an office in Siem Reap. We believe it is very important to show you the unknown treasure of the real Cambodia. Of course we will take you to see the highlights, as no visitor should miss Angkor Wat, but we are also pleased to show you lesser known sites - something which is often promised but not always delivered.

Where to go in Cambodia?

Most visitors fly in to Siem Reap, visit the Temples of Angkor, and then leave the country.  This is a real shame as the rest of the country is filled with fantastic natural beauty and historic temples. So, depending on how long you have and where your interests like, the guide below can help you plan your trip.

To truly experience Cambodia, you need to spend a few weeks traveling around. Natural attractions range from the northeastern jungles, to the lovely beaches of Sihanoukville, and the mighty rivers that cut across the country. Our staff and guides are enthusiastic about their country of residence and are more than happy to help you plan a journey perfectly suited to your needs. Whether you seek luxury travel, an adventurous journey, or a classic tour of Cambodia’s main sites Exotissimo knows the best program for your holiday.

When to go in Cambodia?

The winter months (October to February) are the best time to travel to Cambodia as the air is cool and the skies are clear.  However, the dust at this time of year can be irritating and the crowds at the Angkor temples are at their highest numbers.  March to May sees hotter temperatures and dry skies, and the heat continues in to June through August when the monsoon season starts.  The rains, however, do not usually cause a major problem for travelers as they tend to be short- but hard- afternoon showers.

The Cambodian water festival in October is a lively affair with 3 days of dragon boat racing taking place in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and Buddhist New Year in April as well as Pchum Ben Festival in September see families gathering at temples to celebrate.  Although all of these are spectacular events, several restaurants and shops are closed meaning slight disruptions may occur in your travel plans.

This is a guide to the best of the best of Cambodia. We’ve provided ideas for travel, sightseeing and accommodation with a few insider tips along the way.
